How Combining Chest Physiotherapy with Nasopharyngeal Suctioning Aid the Recovery of Paediatric Chest Infections

Spend the morning with Physiotherapists, Tim and Kelly Laxton, husband and wife duo from South Africa, discussing and learning how and why Physiotherapy is used in combination with Nasopharyngeal Suctioning to improve the health of your child when sick. 

Nasopharyngeal Suctioning, also known as nasal suctioning, is a quick procedure to assist in clearing the airways of a patient who is unable to do so themselves. A catheter is attached to a small suctioning device and the tip of the catheter is gently fed down the patient’s nasal cavity to the back of the throat. This allows the physio to suction the patient’s secretions (phlegm) out, clearing the nasal passages and allowing the patient to breathe with ease. This is especially important for patients with excessive amounts of mucus who are unable to cough or clear the mucus themselves. In combination with nasal suctioning, various chest therapy techniques are performed to enhance the effects of the nasal suctioning. 

Tim and Kelly will be demonstrating exactly how to perform nasal suctioning and teach you some basic chest therapy techniques which you can perform at home.
